Supreme Wealth God – Xuan Tian Shang Di (玄天上帝)

Posted by Imperial Harvest on 18 March 2022

Estimated Reading Time: 3 mins

Xuanwu (玄武), or Xuan Tian Shang Di (玄天上帝), is a powerful deity and thought to be one of the highest-ranking figures in Chinese culture. Widely worshipped as the Supreme Wealth God, Xuan Tian Shang Di celebrates his birthday on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month, which falls on 3rd April this year.

Supreme Wealth God Xuan Tian Shang Di
Each year, Xuan Tian Shang Di’s anniversary sees many temples holding major observances of this auspicious occasion, with scores of devotees preparing offerings and food in tribute to the Supreme Wealth God. With Xuan Tian Shang Di’s immense influence, he holds massive influence on the wealth luck of those in his favour, often looked to for guidance by those looking to excel in their business and career ventures.

Devotees praying to Xuanwu
According to historic records from the fall of the Shang dynasty, Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊) had commanded his counterpart, the Jade Emperor (玉皇) to appoint Xuan Tian Shang Di as a commander of the twelve heavenly legions. His triumph over the Demon King granted him his status as one of the highest-ranking deities.

During the Qing dynasty, another legend surrounding Xuan Tian Shang Di was popularised and tells of the deity’s experiences as a mortal. As Xuanwu, he grew remorseful over his actions and sought to redeem himself from his past. In this tale, the Jade Emperor was moved by his determination and sincerity, granting him the title Xuan Tian Shang Di — translating to "Mysterious Heavenly Highest Deity". His sins manifested as a terrifying turtle and a snake, which Xuan Tian Shang Di later defeated.

Through these legends, many temples dedicated to the Supreme Wealth God depict him standing triumphant over a turtle and a snake — signifying his victory, and the triumph of good over evil.

According to legend, this legendary sword aided Xuan Tian Shang Di to defeat the evils he encountered, commanding cosmic energies from seven major constellations in the universe. As an emblem of prosperity, the sword aids its destined owner to achieve similar triumphs in their careers and make great leaps towards business success.

Serpent (金灵蛇)

The creature is symbolic of good fortune, health, wisdom and longevity. In ancient Chinese mythology, the snake held close associations with the Gods, with different deities across the Chinese pantheon assuming its form. Additionally, the serpent is often accompanied by a turtle.

The serpent bestows its destined owner with sharp business acumen and intuition. Referring to the ability to discern and identify information, intuition is a key factor in making sound decisions. Good intuition is extremely important for one’s wealth and success — it empowers individuals to act decisively and seize the strategic opportunities that provide them with lucrative first-mover advantages.

Turtle (乌龟)
Supreme Wealth God Turtle close upSimilarly to serpents, turtles hold strong spiritual and cultural significance as well, becoming a symbol of both heaven and earth. As mythical creatures, turtles are symbolic of knowledge, perseverance, prosperity and longevity. The influence of these creatures extended towards fashion, particularly with Han dynasty people donning jade pendants shaped like turtles.

The turtle bestows its destined owner with the wisdom and knowledge necessary to navigate a path through tough business competition and to rise to the top echelons of their respective industries. This auspicious emblem on Imperial Harvest’s Fine Jadeite Supreme Wealth God also ushers in strategic mentor and benefactor support for its destined owner.

Guan Yin’s First Birthday - Spring 2022

As one of the most influential and widely beloved deities in the Buddhist pantheon, Guan Yin holds immense cultural and religious significance in Chinese culture. Each year, multitudes of devotees travel in pilgrimage to different sites of worship to commemorate Guan Yin’s anniversary. On each of her three birthdays, Buddhist temples hold major observances in tribute to her — involving practices such as the burning of incense, the lighting of candles and making offerings and tributes in her honours. Mount Putuo, an island located in China's Zhejiang province, is a renowned site of worship for Guan Yin and welcomes millions of devotees each year for the celebration of her anniversaries.

Life as Princess Miaoshan

Blog_03.11_Guan Yin First Birthday_Princess Miao Shan

Legends and accounts of Guan Yin first originated in India, and were introduced to China during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD). Guan Yin was often depicted assuming both masculine and feminine attributes in many accounts, owing to their ability to take on a myriad of different forms in the world to best alleviate the plights of humanity.

One of the most well-known accounts of Guan Yin's mortal life was documented in Precious Scroll of Fragrant Mountain (香山寶卷), a Northern Song dynasty (960-1126) text that tells of Guan Yin's mortal birth as Princess Miaoshan.

In Precious Scroll of Fragrant Mountain (香山寶卷), Princess Miaoshan's early years as a member of the royal family opened her eyes to dysfunctional socio-economic orders, exposing her to an environment devoid of compassion. She turned to the study of Buddhist philosophies, which gave her precious insight into the realisation of her vision  — a world full of inspiration, compassion and kindness. Princess Miaoshan's pursuit of Buddhist studies helped to shape her unwavering conviction to aid humanity in achieving its unlimited potential, thereby leading to her dedicating her life to inspire people to pursue their dreams and live a full, satisfying life.

This well-known legend of Princess Miaoshan concludes with her being transformed into the Thousand Hands Guan Yin, or with her reincarnation as Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Filled with compassion, she witnessed the suffering endured by humanity and vowed never to leave until their suffering had ended.

This well-known account of the Goddess of Mercy chronicles that Amitabha Buddha granted Guan Yin eleven heads, bestowing upon her the wisdom she required to both understand and overcome the complexities of humanity. According to legend, she was also granted a thousand hands, providing her with the abilities and reach required to bless those in need of her guidance.

Spring Equinox in Imperial Feng Shui

Posted by Imperial Harvest on 25 February 2022

Estimated Reading Time: 3 mins

The Spring Equinox, also known as Chun Fen (春分), marks the midpoint of the spring season. Spring brings much relief from its preceding winter season, with daylight hours gradually lengthening and temperatures becoming increasingly warmer. In many parts of the northern hemisphere, the Spring Equinox begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 0° and ends when it reaches the longitude of 15°.

Blog_02.25_Spring Equinox_Spring Equinox in China

It forms the 4th of 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, beginning on 20 March this year.

Imperial Feng Shui Significance

In Imperial Feng Shui, spring is closely associated with the minor yang. One of the four phenomena that form Tai Ji, the collective essence of Heaven and Earth, the minor yang’s significance in Imperial Feng Shui lies in its governance of an individual’s innate intuition. Referring to the ability to discern and identify key information in the absence of clarity, intuition is a critical factor in making sound decisions. Good intuition prevails in the face of ambiguity, empowering individuals to act decisively, seize opportunities and enjoy first-mover advantages. Blog_02.25_Spring Equinox_Minor YangThe inherent link between intuition and the minor yang entails that increasing one’s intuitive qualities would be paramount in ensuring an optimal balance of this important phenomenon.

Imperial Rites during the Spring Equinox

The Spring Equinox marks a day when the sun is situated directly above the earth’s equator, with both day and night being of equal length. In Chinese culture, this equilibrium becomes a significant characteristic of the Spring Equinox.

In dynastic China, the arrival of the Spring Equinox gave rise to a traditional festival, with the esteemed Chinese emperors leading in time-honoured imperial rites in worship of the sun. Such imperial rites to the sun during the Spring Equinox originated during the Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BC), with the imperial family offering various specially-prepared tributes to the Sun God. These rites took place at the Temple of the Sun (日坛), an altar commissioned to be built in 1530 during the late Ming dynasty by Emperor Jia Jing. Since then, it has stood as the foremost site for tributary worship to the sun, to which they prayed for the ideal weather conditions for the nourishment of crops.

Although the Temple of the Sun fell into disrepair by 1911, plans were drawn in 1955 to restore the temple and its surrounding compound. By 1969, it was fully restored and reopened to the public, where it has since received and welcomed visitors and tourists alike.

Blog_02.25_Spring Equinox_Temple of the Sun

Tributes of various offerings were thought to soothe the Sun God’s temperament, in turn ushering in another year of successful and bountiful harvests. As a primarily agrarian society, the success of a harvest season was largely dependent on suitable weather conditions, leading to the continuance of this tradition in some parts of China today.

During the Tang dynasty, it was customary to present gifts of farming equipment to foster agricultural practices. Partaking in traditional delicacies and wines were also prevalent during the Spring Equinox.

An auspicious occasion

With the Spring Equinox marking the midpoint of the season, the season’s auspicious energies are heightened further during the occasion. During this period, the birthdays of three of the most important deities in Chinese culture are commemorated and celebrated by devotees worldwide:

  • Career Wealth God Tua Pek Gong’s birthday: 2nd day of the 2nd lunar month (4 March)
  • Goddess of Mercy Guan Yin’s birthday: 19th day of the 2nd lunar month (21 March)
  • Supreme Wealth God Xuan Tian Shang Di’s birthday: 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month (3 April)

These three deities celebrate their respective birthdays around the Spring Equinox, greatly complementing this auspicious season of growth and its precepts of renewal. Take advantage of the precious opportunity that this auspicious period brings, and contact your trusted Imperial Harvest consultants to acquire the blessings of these esteemed deities and unlock your unlimited potential.

What is a Feng Shui Period

Posted by Imperial Harvest on 18 February 2022

Estimated Reading Time: 5 mins

In this article, Master David will define a Feng Shui period and the two prevailing Feng Shui period systems adopted by San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Star and Xuan Kong Liu Fa practitioners.

San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Star is a Feng Shui discipline that integrates the studies of the Five Elements, Eight Trigrams, Lo Shu Numbers, Planetary stars and 24 Mountains. This helps us understand the influence of planetary stars, direction, space and time on a house, office or shop. San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Star practitioners’ work involves measuring the facing direction of a building and plotting its astrological chart based on the Feng Shui period it belongs to.

Xuan Kong Liu Fa is a Feng Shui discipline that adopts the six methodologies, namely Xuan Kong (玄空), Man and Woman (雌雄), Golden Dragon (金龙), Leaning Star (挨星), Castle Gate (城门) and Grand Duke (太岁) to assess the auspiciousness of a building. It builds on the foundation of Early Heaven Ba Gua, Lo Shu Numbers, Planetary Stars and 24 Mountains.

There are two time systems governing the studies of Xuan Kong Feng Shui:

  • Three Cycles Nine Periods (San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Star)
  • Two Cycles Eight Periods (Xuan Kong Liu Fa)

What is a Feng Shui period?

A Feng Shui period (元运) is a multi-planetary calendar system that tracks the movement of major planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn relative to Earth.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Chinese Astrology

The ancient sages spent centuries studying the movement of planetary stars. This eventually gave birth to the two distinct calendar systems that study how the movements of the planetary stars affect the energies of our residences, offices and factories.

Three Cycles Nine Periods is applied by San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Star Feng Shui practitioners who measure the buildings' facing direction and period before plotting the Flying Star chart.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Example of Facing Direction

One major cycle is made up of three periods, with each period lasting twenty years. Hence, one major cycle is sixty years.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_180-Year FS Major Cycle

Two Cycles Eight Periods is applied by Xuan Kong Liu Fa practitioners.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Two Cycles Eight Periods

The methodology of calculating the number of years in each Feng Shui period is done by referencing the numbers on the Lo Shu squares and matching them with the trigram positions of the Early Heaven Ba Gua.

Origin of Lo Shu Square

Ancient Chinese legends tell of Emperor Yu-Huang swimming in the mighty Yellow River (Huang-He). The Emperor sought solitude by the river’s edge and as he gazed into the water, he saw a turtle at his feet. He immediately recognised the turtle, realising that it bore a resemblance to the pattern of stars that he saw each night before he went to bed. Noticing that the turtle had a special pattern on its back, Emperor Yu-Huang realised that the creature was the Divine Turtle. The Lo Shu Square is a 3 by 3 grid pattern, with dots in the centre of the square, and 15 dots in each row.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Lo Shu Turtle

The Lo Shu Square was an important model for time, direction and space, serving as a basis for city planning, tomb design, and temple design. It was used to designate spaces of political and religious importance.

Each number in a Lo Shu Square represents a direction. For example,

  • 1 represents North
  • 8 represents North-East

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Origin of the Eight Trigram

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Feng Shui Periods_3

The Two Cycles Eight Periods system denotes two primary cycles: Upper Cycle and Lower Cycle. The Upper Cycle consists of Periods 1, 2,3 and 4 whereas the. Lower Cycle consists of Periods 6,7,8 and 9. The duration of each period is different, unlike the Three Cycles Nine Periods system where every period is a standardised 20 years.

A fundamental difference between the two different time systems would be the trigram that is used to represent each Feng Shui period.

Period 1 in the Three Cycles Nine Periods system is represented by the Kan trigram (坎卦) while Period 1 in the Two Cycles Eight Periods is represented by the Kun trigram (坤卦). The former adopts the Later Heaven Ba Gua while the latter adopts the Early Heaven Ba Gua.

To understand the relationship between Early Heaven Ba Gua and Lo Shu Square, we will combine the Early Heaven Ba Gua and Lo Shu Square diagram for better visualisation.

In the Early Heaven Ba Gua Lo Shu Square diagram,

  • Period 1 is represented by the 坤 Kun Trigram
  • Period 8 is represented by the 艮 Gen Trigram

The table below details the relationship between the Eight Trigrams and Feng Shui Period.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Relationship between Eight Trigram and Feng Shui Period Chart

How do we calculate the number of years in a Feng Shui period in the Two Cycles Eight Periods system?

With the trigram identified, each yin yao (阴爻) line will be allocated the number 6, while yang yao (阳爻) lines are represented by the number 9. Adding up the total of the 3 numbers would generate the number of years.

For Period 1 (坤卦), there are three yin yaos. Hence the number of years in Period 1 would be 6 x 3 = 18, making up 18 years in Period 1. For period 9, there are three Yang Yaos, hence the number of years for Period 9 would be 3 x 9 = 27 years.

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Feng Shui Period Years 2

Under the Two Cycles Eight Periods system, there are two separate streams of Feng Shui periods: one that tracks the mountain luck (early heaven luck) and one that tracks the water luck (later heaven luck). At the same time, we should bear in mind that according to Imperial Feng Shui classics, Mountains governs benefactors, health and harmony,  while water governs wealth. (山管人丁,水管财)

Blog_02.18_Period 9_Water Luck Trigram

Water luck diagram illustrating the Early Heaven Ba Gua, the Feng Shui period and the number of years in each period.

The mountain luck period 1 adopts the original Kun (坤) trigram of the Early Heaven Ba Gua while the water luck adopts the opposite Qian (乾) trigram. Hence for period 1 mountain luck, it lasts for 18 years while period 1 water luck lasts for 27 years.

This explains why Period 9 mountain luck (Early Heaven Luck) started back in 2017 and hence is under the influence of Period 9 flying stars.

Master David applies both San Yuan Xuan Kong Flying Stars and Xuan Kong Liu Fa principles to help his clients maximise the potential of their homes.

We are now well into the Early Heaven Luck of Period 9, which has been in effect since 2017. Activating the Period 9 wealth star is of paramount importance in order to gain powerful benefactors, maximise wealth potential and thrive in the Period 9 economy.

2022 is a golden opportunity to activate Star #9.

In the 2022 Annual Flying Star Chart, Master David demonstrates that Star #9 (右弼) and Star #1 Greedy Wolf (贪狼) have flown to the South and North Sectors respectively.

To safeguard Master David’s family trade secrets, not all information will be revealed in our blog article. Exclusive insights will be reserved for clients who book a complimentary Period 9 Feng Shui consultation.

Spring 2022 - Business God of Wealth - Guan Gong

Out of the Five Wealth Gods that are thought to be the most formidable manifestations of auspicious luck and wealth within Chinese culture, Guan Gong is widely known and worshipped as the Business God of Wealth.

Blog_02.11_Spring 2022 BWG_GG

Where the Grand Wealth God Bi Gan is central to the heightened emphasis on prosperity, good fortune and abundance during the Lunar New Year, the remaining two direct wealth gods — Guan Gong and Tua Pek Gong — play no small part during this highly auspicious period.

During the late Eastern Han dynasty, Guan Gong served as a high-ranking military general under the warlord, Liu Bei (刘备). As a military leader, he held an undying commitment to restoring the glory of the Han dynasty, working to repel hostile forces that threatened to jeopardise it. His strategic acumen, strong morality, alongside his bravery and loyalty established a solid reputation for Guan Gong as one of the most formidable figures of his time.

Today, Guan Gong’s legendary tenacity, foresight and courage are widely revered as desirable attributes and characteristics, especially amongst entrepreneurs and is recognised in his deification as the Business Wealth God.

Blog_02.11_Spring 2022 BWG_Praying to GG

Much like Bi Gan, Guan Gong’s guidance and blessings are often celebrated and sought out during the Lunar New Year. The 13th day of the Lunar New Year is often attributed to Guan Gong, with many businesses and organisations praying for his blessings to ensure their continued prosperity for the year ahead.

Both wealth gods oversee the direct wealth aspirations of their devotees, however, an important distinction to make is that Guan Gong’s influence leans towards the business fortunes. In his role as the Business Wealth God, Guan Gong’s guidance and influence are actively sought out by countless entrepreneurs in pursuit of their dreams.

The Lunar New Year presents a highly favourable opportunity to kick off the year of the Water Tiger with optimal guidance and direction from this formidable direct wealth god. Empowering devotees with the qualities necessary to excel at business, our blessed clients are poised to usher in another year of prosperity and abundance.

Empowering budding entrepreneurs to emerge victorious in their business ventures, and opening up a clear runway to attaining their greatest goals and aspirations.

Introduction to Period 9 Feng Shui

Posted by Imperial Harvest on 11 February 2022

Estimated Reading Time: 3 mins

Based on the Two Cycles Eight Periods (二元八运), the Early Heaven Luck of Period 9 spans from 2017 to 2043 while the Later Heaven Luck of Period 9 covers the period between 2024 and 2043. In 2024, both Early and Later Heaven Luck will overlap and herald a new chapter in Feng Shui.

The trigram that represents Period 9 is the Li Trigram (离卦) which signifies the fire element.

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram

Traits of the Li Trigram (离卦):

  • It is just like fire, whose heat can be felt despite its intangible flame (fire is both the source and destroyer of life)
  • According to the Eight Trigrams family tree, the Li Trigram represents the quintessential demure and attractive young girl

After the arrival of Period 9 in 2017, we have witnessed the meteoric rise of many assets and industries that bear the traits of the Li Trigram. Many are also inclined to outwardly present their best selves to the world, and hence luxury assets such as private properties, fine jewellery, watches and cars have risen in popularity.

Akin to the life-building and life-destroying properties of fire, we have also witnessed many traditional industries decimated and new industries being created in the past 5 years with the arrival of Period 9.

Major key trends and opportunities

Metaverse

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram copy-1

COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of remote work. Working from home has become the norm as many parts of the world have transitioned to working virtually. Online content creators have also risen in popularity, with more people willing to express themselves online - be it by posting photos and videos of themselves, or capturing moments and milestones on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Online advertising, shopping and rise of digital-preneurs

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram copy 2

Many luxury brands are venturing into social media advertising, and less reliant on traditional media. More people are increasingly shopping online and via livestreams, spurred by the proliferation of platforms such as Shopify and Woocommerce. These have also encouraged the rise of digital entrepreneurship.

Appreciation of virtual assets

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram copy 3

Since 2017, prices of virtual currencies such as Bitcoin have experienced a multifold increase. Digital assets such as non-fungible tokens and lands have appreciated in value and gained mainstream acceptance.

Autonomous driving

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram copy 4

Tesla, a leading global producer of electric vehicles and clean energy, has seen its share price rise 20-fold since the beginning of 2017. The unprecedented advancements it has made in autonomous driving technologies will eventually transform mobility industries, technology, cities and environments on a global scale.

Growing appreciation of luxury assets

Blog_100221_Period 9_Li Trigram copy 5

Over the past 5 years, luxury assets such as real estate in prime districts, fine Feng Shui jewellery, watches and cars have grown in popularity. In the local real estate market, newly launched private properties have increased in popularity over the past 5 years, as more seek to upgrade their HDB public housing apartments to private properties.

Understanding Period 9 Feng Shui

Over the past few years, Master David and the Imperial Harvest team have worked tirelessly to educate clients on the underlying principles behind home Feng Shui. Before delving into the significance of Period 9 Feng Shui, it is imperative to understand the fundamentals.

Spring 2022 - Grand Wealth God - Bi Gan

Posted by Imperial Harvest on 04 February 2022

Estimated reading time: 3 mins

In the annals of Chinese history, there are five significant figures overseeing different areas of wealth — career, business, investment, trading and windfall wealth. These figures came to be known as the Five Wealth Gods, and are thought to be the most formidable manifestations of auspicious luck in Chinese culture.

Blog_02.04_Spring 2022 GWG_Bi Gan

Prior to his deification as a God of Wealth, Bi Gan was known as a prominent minister who adeptly guided King Zhou in his administration during the late Shang dynasty (circa 1556 to 1046 BC). As one of the key advisors to the King, Bi Gan’s role was crucial in ensuring the prosperity of the empire. His intelligent and eminent stewardship was recognised in his eventual deification as the Grand Wealth God.

Out of the Five Wealth Gods, the Grand Wealth God Bi Gan is seen as the most powerful manifestation of all wealth gods, overseeing the earthly direct wealth aspirations of his devotees. In a hugely important position, Bi Gan bestows blessings of abundance and prosperity impartially, empowering his devotees to grow, experience their breakthroughs and achieve their greatest goals.

The arrival of the lunar new year is often associated with renewal and fresh starts, with many people visiting temples and sites of worship in droves to seek blessings of fortune as well as guidance and direction for the new year. Today, the Grand Wealth God Bi Gan is so inextricably linked with abundance and fortune that he is more colloquially referred to as “Cai Shen Ye” (财神爷), or the grandfather of wealth.

Conceptualised by Master David, this signature Imperial Harvest treasure is an impeccable tribute to Bi Gan. His bestowing of multiple streams of direct wealth, coupled with his steadfast protection from financial losses make for a contemporary work of art that immortalises Bi Gan’s authority, power and influence.

Direct wealth encompasses the income potential we derive from our careers, businesses, sales and other regular sources of income.

The Grand Wealth God Bi Gan controls and manages earthly wealth, overseeing the prosperity aspirations of his devotees. His role is especially prominent on the fifth day of the first lunar month — with many following a time-honoured tradition of welcoming the God of Wealth with lively celebrations and gatherings. As such, the fifth day of the first lunar month has come to be widely associated with Bi Gan’s birthday. On this day, devotees not only welcome Bi Gan into their lives and the year ahead, but also thank him for the blessings of wealth bestowed upon them.
