The Seventh month of the Lunar calendar is often known as "Hungry Ghost Month". An annual Chinese tradition, this is known as the time where spirits return from the afterlife.
Hungry Ghost Month is traditionally perceived to be inauspicious because of the urban myths associated with it.

The genuine rationale behind the celebration of the event is to honour one of the greatest virtues of humanity - heart of gratitude and at the same time, championing the generosity.

In this article, we will dispel three myths about the "Hungry Ghost Month".
Myth number 1
There are no auspicious dates for renovation, move in or even wedding

The logic behind selection of auspicious dates for activities like wedding or renovation is to ensure smoothness of event. The truth is there are many auspicious dates in a month. The date selection method used in Fengshui is independent of cultural nuances. The date selection methods include, San Yuan Qi Men Dun Jia, Auxiliary Stars and individual Bazi chart.

The truth is all activities come with a degree of risk. The tabloid media often magnifies and associates selected accidents to be associated with Hungry Ghost Month and conveniently avoid reporting the same issues that happen any other months.

It is dangerous to stay out late

Many fengshui masters took the chance to publish populist views that it is dangerous to stay out late during Hungry Ghost Month.
The original intention of releasing the hungry ghost to the human realm is NOT to allow the hungry ghosts to wreck havoc. A logical mind will know that it will never be the intentions of the God to release the legions of hungry ghosts to create troubles for human beings.
The original intent is to champion the love of giving and helping others. Many hungry ghosts may not be related to us by blood but we continue to offer food and incense papers to demonstrate our generosity.
