My First Impression of Fengshui: Cheap advice on how to create wealth

When I was young, my impression of Fengshui was some random uncles sitting on cheap plastic stools advising on their clients on how to create wealth and success with their makeshift mahjong table and their religious statues or parrots. Their clients listen intently on wealth creation advice and sometimes these masters gave lucky 4d numbers. Their advice is cheap; just a token sum of $2-4. Their remedies would be to burn some incense papers and wear some paper talisman for good luck. These fortune tellers inundated the markets. As a result, the fengshui industry reputation is smeared with random superstition and cheap placebos.

Later Observation: Western Invasion on Fengshui

Then in the 1990s, the second wave of fengshui revolution came in. Zodiac based fengshui remedies were wildly popular. Inspired by Western astrology, many fengshui masters capitalized on the trends and made largely general baseless forecasts to sell zodiac based fengshui remedies made of glazed glass (Liu Li琉璃) to address mass fengshui needs. Predictably, I heard many bad reviews.

Arrival of Internet and Influx of "Cafe" Fengshui Masters

In the early 2000s, the arrival of internet meant that fengshui information become readily accessible. Some people took the opportunity to launch online courses and weekend fengshui seminars. Many of these students were parachuted into titles of fengshui masters after a short weekend training with almost zero practical experience. If you would not trust a "heart surgeon" who attended a 3 day crash course on heart surgery to perform complex medical procedures on your loved ones, why would you entrust your future and prosperity to a "fengshui master" who only attended an online programme or 3 day crash course.

Internet age

Many of these freshly graduated fengshui masters launched their website and started consulting people at cafes or industrial park office. These "cafe" fengshui masters advise their clients in noisy busy cafes; clients have zero privacy. Can you imagine seeing a professional doctor at a public cafe?

While they claim to bring wealth and success, none really respect their own fengshui practice or commit themselves to the success of their clients.

Many members of the public were disappointed with the results after trying the random fengshui cures with no proven track record. Once again fengshui reputation continue to be tarnished. The entire fengshui industry reputation declined to a new low.
